About Bartley Griffith:
Bartley P. "Bart" Griffith Jr. '93 became president of Shady Side Academy on July 1, 2019, and is only the second alumnus to lead the school.
From 2015 to 2019, Griffith was the assistant head of Gilman School, an independent K-12 day school for boys in Baltimore. There, he oversaw academic affairs, assisted with the overall operations of the school, and worked closely with the headmaster, board of trustees and senior leadership team.
From 2017-2019, Griffith also served as a dean and faculty member of the Penn GSE Independent School Teaching Residency, a collaboration between the University of Pennsylvania and 10 leading independent schools that enables early-career educators to receive a master's degree in education from Penn and complete a two-year fellowship at a partner school.
Prior to Gilman, Griffith held a variety of positions over 15 years at the Westminster Schools in Atlanta, including K-12 English Department chair, dean of students, and football and girls' lacrosse coach.
Griffith holds a bachelor's degree in English and history from Bucknell University, a master's degree in teaching of English from Columbia University and a master's degree in English from Middlebury College.
A native of Pittsburgh, he attended Shady Side Academy in grades 6-12 and was varsity football captain, editor of the Shady Side News and recipient of the President's Prize. As an alumnus, he served on the SSA Board of Visitors from 2007 to 2019. He and his wife, Danica, have two children who attend Shady Side: Colette '28 and Cannon '30.
